Cancer and Supplementation

A friend just sent me this article : http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/12/health/salmon-cancer-time/index.html

And this was my reply:
This is a very interesting article.  It again reminds me that it is not just one addition to our bodies that create a change, it is many things.  One thing may be a factor, and how does the body adapt to that one thing while still considering all the other 'events' that are occurring in our bodies?  Is it the actual supplementation versus the whole fish/ cooked/uncooked?  Is it that a fish supplement is not digested as real food?  Is it that the individual has other unknown factors playing a part with internal metabolism?  Is it that the food these people eat, lead to more inflammation and then is it the combination of  that inflammation and the supplement? As the article stated:

The study measured omega-3 blood levels in the participating men, and did not include information on the volunteers' eating habits, so researchers could not differentiate between the effects of fatty acids from fish from those of supplements. The point is: We do not know the answer to those questions. Especially not from this article and therefore we cannot logically determine as of yet, if the increase in prostate cancer is connected at all from the ingestion of Omega - 3 fish oil supplements.

As I have stated before, the human body has not evolved much in the last hundreds, thousands of years, and yet the number of 'physiological events that can be defined as stressors has increased.  It is our inability to adapt to these stressors that are causing the pathology.  Aging is a pathology.  Those who can physiological adapt quicker to the events, age more slowly- I BELIEVE.  If you add more stressors thinking of duration, intensity and frequency then combine that with how your body is 'restoring' itself back to homeostasis/balance if the ratio is out of proportion and you spend more time in 'stress events' versus a homeostasis, then disease occurs because the body does not have time to heal, fight it off.  The same is true with athletes.  If your intensity of exercise , duration, and frequency is not balanced with restorative time, the body can become injured, or begin to perform less no matter how often or hard your train. This is why you begin to notice as you age, my dear athletes, that your recovery time needed increases, your pain increases (i.e. a sign of inflammation), and your power, strength, and flexibility decreases.

Back to the article, there have been many people in the health and holistic fields for years highly recommending that we eat foods high in antioxidants and whole foods for fats instead of supplements.  I concur.  The reality is, most of us have no idea objectively if what we are ingesting is really fueling us, healing us, or killing us.  Even if we eat well perceptively, where is the blood work , brain scan, heart scans for Preventative analysis?  These studies are useless to us unless we can have access to objective testing that can be available with the help of Functional Medicine Doctors but these test are not currently covered by our health insurances so the majority of us cannot afford them.

I honestly wish I could have access to an inter-disciplinary approach to my health that would include: Functional Medicine Primary Physician Functional Nutritionist Integrative Functional Movement and Massage Practitioner
Integrative Functional Interval Training teacher   All under one roof working together to create a body, a brain, and a mind that integrates all the systems of the body for restorative and Maintenance of Health.
