How does the mention of my Physical Therapy experience matter to my massage technique and ability?
I believe the education, knowledge base and experience that I have acquired through my career as a PTA has contributed to my increased skill level as a LMT. Throughout my physical therapy career, I have been mentored by highly trained therapists in the field of manual physical therapy. I have worked side by side, observing, enduring accountability and reinforcement through practicum, with other highly trained medical professionals. This has enabled me to gain the skills necessary to understand human arthrokinematics and the neuromuscular system in a way that improves my skills as a massage therapist. Massage therapy gives me the opportunity to work in a professional environment that facilitates a one on one treatment session. This allows me to perform a postural evaluation prior to the massage that will enable me to appropriately apply the manual technique or techniques that will contribute to the clients need and desired goals. I believe that massage therapy is not just a 'feel good' profession. Although I offer a basic Swedish/relaxation massage, Which I have Founded calling it FlowMassage TM. I specialize in bringing about pain relief and educating the client in terms of postural changes and/or lifestyle changes that may be beneficial to the clients intended long term or short term goals. I believe massage therapy to be both an art form as well as a necessary component within the health care system. I believe massage therapy techniques can be utilized to help improve the quality of life for individuals suffering from chronic pain by bringing about structural changes, range of motion changes, decreasing pain, improving function, helping to decrease stress, learning new patterns of breathing and so much more! I also believe massage therapy to be highly effective in Preventative Care. Therefore, bringing about this education and postural changes before they begin to cause chronic pain is very probable and necessary. The combination of massage and yoga therapy is a symbiotic profession that I intend to perform and pursue with all my intelligence, compassion, and integrity until the completion of my life's journey. I have seen with my own eyes and touched with my own hands, the scientific and intuitive healing touches of manual therapies integrated with Compassion Based Attention and Vocabulary. While joint mobilization is NOT utilized within the scope of practice of a massage therapist, through the application of good muscular and neuromuscular techniques, a skilled massage therapist can help the changes take place in the muscular system that may enable structural changes within the skeletal system. Yoga is not separate from my massage practice. In my own personal Yoga practice I perform self massage modalities and in my massage practice I perform Yoga modalities both personally to self and professionally for clients. Therefore, even though I practice yoga and massage, I also practice the integration of yoga and massage bringing this to the client. |
